As a property manager or a business owner, it is important to keep an eye on your property’s roofing system. Damage as a result of hail, wind, or heavy rainfall can affect not just the roof and the entire property, but also the tenants or any person inside the premises. While you can’t predict the potential threat of inclement weather, implementing a proactive approach in roof maintenance is always necessary.
JTI Roofing, one of the top local commercial roofing contractors, shares tips to get your commercial roof system storm-ready.
Document the State of Your Property
Before a storm approaches, it is a good idea to document the condition of your property thoroughly. Pay special attention to your roof—take images of it as safely as possible, together with the other components of your property like siding and windows. Do the same once the storm has passed. These will be essential when you file property insurance claims and work with insurers.
The existing roof coating on the system helps prevent leaks. Over time, however, it becomes less functional, especially if debris is scattered on the roof surface. If you have trees hanging above the roof system, trim off the branches to prevent damage. Inspect the trees as well to see if they pose danger in the event of heavy winds.
Inspect the Gutters
Debris from trees, including leaves and twigs, can build up and clog the gutters, preventing proper drainage. Water can’t flow freely away from your property when this happens, which is why they end up damaging the fascia boards and the other exterior components of your property. Be sure to clean the gutter system before an expected rainfall comes.
